Have you ever found yourself stuck in traffic bound for the Holland or Lincoln Tunnels?  Jammed into an overcrowded PATH train?  Have you found yourself thinking "There has to be a better way?"  So have I.  So I came up with a solution.  It is meant to work in tandem with congestion pricing, which is another solution.  I think they should be throwing everything they have at this problem.  But where congestion pricing is a punitive system for "bad" behavior, this facilitates and rewards "good" behavior on the part of the commuter.

Stacking Space

I looked at all the factors that make the tunnel approaches awful, and looked for ways to eliminate them.  A big part of the problem is that vehicles waiting to get into the tunnels use the same street space as vehicles trying to get around Manhattan, resulting in chaos.

App-based car-pooling

App-based car services have opened a whole new world, some of it good, some of it bad.  This eliminates some of the bad and leverages car-pooling apps to move more people in fewer vehicles.

Autonomous Buses

They are already in regular use in several cities around the globe.  As shuttles to move people across the Hudson, they would be ideal.  The route is simple and the buses are made for short trips.

Tim Troxler

Yes, it is just me so far.  An army of one.  My background is in landscape architecture, and I currently work for a private company, doing construction management, usually for NYC parks projects.  I spent several years at the NJDOT.  I've worked on master plans for new developments, construction documents for parks and public spaces, and wetland restoration plans.  I've worked on projects in nine different states and two Canadian provinces.  I am not doing this out of any self-promotional strategy.  I'm not trying to make the NYDOT or the Port Authority "look bad".  I am just a concerned citizen who has developed some ideas to improve commuting into Manhattan and wants to share the ideas.  I did all the research and writing for this myself.  I hadn't used SketchUp in years, so I basically had to re-learn it to make the 3D model.  Transportation has long been a personal interest of mine.  I had been doing a lot of reading on congestion reduction strategies and autonomous vehicles, and these ideas of combining them just came together.
